Functional and molecular characterization of cancer-derived extracellular vesicles

Cancer-derived extracellular vesicles have been demonstrated to play a crucial role in cancer biology. Our team is particularly interested in cancer EV heterogeneity and we have been studying a particular population of extracellular vesicles, known as large oncosomes. These EVs are released by aggressive cancer cells that exhibit cell plasticity and have acquired metastatic abilities.  I will share data on the functions and the molecular cargo of large oncosomes obtained from different types of cancer cells and patient plasma. I will focus on the potentials this EVs offer to study intercellular communication mediated by transfer of molecules and/or entire cytosolic organelles, and on the implications of these findings for liquid biopsy approaches.

En bref

Dolores Di Vizio, MD, PhD, is a molecular pathologist, and a molecular and cell biologist, with 25 years of experience on urological cancer. Currently she is a Professor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and she serves as co-leader of the Cancer Biology Program at the Cedars Sinai Cancer Center. She published over 130 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including in high impact journals and made important contributions to cancer research in a number of areas, including membrane dynamics and signal transduction.

Her work has been cited over 25,000 times and her H-index is 65. She has been funded by the NIH and the DoD since 2007. Her team has emerged as a leading group in studies of cancer EVs since the discovery of the large oncoosmes.  She sits on several grant study sections including from the NIH, the DoD and the ERC. She has been involved in activities of the International Society of Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) since 2014 and is an associate editor for the Journal of Extracellular Vesicles.
