Metabolism-driven epigenetics

Chemical modifications of histones and DNA, at the heart of epigenetic regulations, are almost exclusively dependent on metabolites. Based on this consideration, an emerging idea is that the epigenome could largely reflect the state of cell metabolism. Taking into account the functional interface between competing histone acetylation and histone acylations (corresponding to longer chain acyl groups), we discovered a direct role for mitochondrial activity in controlling chromatin dynamics. The seminar summarizes the major steps in the laboratory’s work that led to this concept and discusses its implications.
